ATLANTA — Providence Canyon State Park is about to get bigger.

The State Board of Natural Resources voted Tuesday to purchase two parcels of land next to the park for $3.3 million.

The land will add another 1,700 acres to the park, which will allow the expansion of hiking trails and camping sites.

The canyon was formed by bad farming practices, causing the ground to erode away to form the massive gullies that now make up the canyon.

The park, known as Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon,” currently includes more than 10 miles of hiking trails along the canyon floor and around the rim of the canyon itself; there are spectacular views of the red, white, and orangish soil that make up the canyon walls.

Providence Canyon State Park is about two hours southwest of Atlanta.
