Giant fish captured in north Georgia lake

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Wildlife Resources Division captured a huge fish in a Georgia lake during routine sampling.

The nearly eight-pound largemouth bass was caught in Allatoona Lake this spring.

Staff members weighed and measured the fish and then returned it to the water. A micro-tag indicated the fish was stocked by WRD staff back in 2014 when it was just seven inches long.

The largest largemouth bass to be caught in Georgia weighed a whopping 22.5 pounds, so this one still has room to grow. The fish’s average lifespan in the wild is 10 to 16 years.

Bass are carnivorous and feed on smaller fish like shad.
