Grammy-nominated Atlanta rapper says he was targeted in wild shooting, crash

ATLANTA — A Grammy-nominated rapper wants to know why he was shot and while driving on an Atlanta interstate last week.

Rapper Cyhi the Prynce, also known as Cydel Young, posted the aftermath of a scary crash that nearly ended his life.

The rapper, who’s a Grammy-nominated songwriter for other rappers, such as Kanye West, posted that there was “an attempt” on his life that happened on Feb. 11.

Atlanta police said officers were called to the 500 block of Hamilton E. Holmes Drive around 11:30 p.m. and found a 2017 Bentley SUV overturned in the wood line.

Young explained that while he was driving I-20 west, a red Maserati or Aston Martin pulled up beside his SUV and started following him. When he got off on the H.E. Holmes exit, Young said the same red car passed him and, while stopped at the exit, the car turned around and came up the wrong way toward him. Young told officers he then sped off in hopes of losing the red car but then heard gunfire and glass shattering in his car.

Young told officers he lost control of the SUV during a sharp curve, and flipped it into a tree. When the SUV came to a rest, Young said he jumped out of the sunroof and ran into the woods.

But Young said the incident didn’t end there.

Young told officers a short time later he heard more shots coming from where his SUV was. In his Instagram post, Young said the suspects “shot the car up some more.”

Young suffered a hand injury in the crash and shooting. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Young said he didn’t know if he was targeted for a robbery or possibly mistaken identity but he said he wants to know know what he can do to “fix the issue.”

“I was born and raised in Atlanta, GA, and I have tremendous love for my city ... but it’s chaotic out here. I’m trying my best to keep a level head, but when you dont know who is after you its hard to wrap your mind around it and not be paranoid,” Young said on his Instagram post.

Young had this plea for Atlanta.

“So everyone that’s in Atlanta right now, please protect yourself, stay out the way and be careful, because it could all be over in a split second,” he said. “I understand there’s a lot of beef going on in my city between different crews, that is fueled by the music... but it is time that we all have a sit down and have a peace meeting.”
