COMMERCE, Ga. — Police said a gunman is in custody after he shot and killed a mail carrier during his rounds on a rural route in northeast Georgia Saturday.
The Banks County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to reports of a person shot on Hebron Road in Commerce around 9:30 a.m.
Police found Asa (Junior) Wood, 59, dead of a gunshot wound.

Investigators were able to identify a person of interest and deputies were given a description of the suspect’s car.
Police identified that person of interest as Larry Steven Grogan, 49.

Deputies patrolling an area near Highway 51 spotted Grogan’s car and tried to conduct a traffic stop.
Grogan sped away but a deputy was able to perform a PIT maneuver and disable the car.

Deputies said Grogan immediately started shooting at officers, who returned fire, hitting him.
Grogan , was taken to the hospital with injures that weren’t life-threatening. There are several charges against him pending.
The GBI was requested to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
