SNELLVILLE, Ga.,None — Gwinnett firefighters are looking for the people behind a fire at a church in Snellville.
"We believe it to be an intentionally set fire," Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
Firefighters were called to Zoar United Methodist Church near Centerville Highway around 12:30 a.m. Friday. Rutledge said an alarm inside the church's gymnasium alerted them.
When firefighters arrived, the gymnasium had been vandalized and the people responsible had taken off, Rutledge said. But the fire had already been extinguished by the sprinkler system.
"This is a prime example of the effectiveness of fire sprinklers inside buildings," Gwinnett Fire said in a news release.
Rutledge said the fire was small and caused minimal smoke and water damage to the kitchen area of the gymnasium.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Georgia Arson Hotline at 1-800-282-5804. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Arson is a felony and could result in up to 20 years behind bars.
