15-year-old accused of choking mother to death

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police have arrested a teen who they said choked his mother to death on Tuesday.

Police said the incident started shortly after 5 p.m. when police responded to the Oakwood Vista Apartments on Ardsley Place in Norcross regarding a medical call.

The caller was the victim’s nephew who had returned home and discovered her body.

“They found the deceased female in this apartment complex. Medical personnel attempted to render aid, but were unsuccessful,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Deon Washington said.

The son, 15, left the apartment, but was detained by police near the front of the complex.

Police said the teen choked his mother following a dispute over taking medication.

Police are investigating whether mental illness played a role in the dispute.

There were no other family members inside the apartment when the argument happened, police said.

Neighbors were shocked to learn that someone was killed at their complex.

“I have never seen anything like that happen out here,’ Ssheree Bethia said.

Police said they boy will likely be charged with murder as an adult.
