6-year-old boy shot during birthday party

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police are trying to figure out who shot a 6-year-old Gwinnett County boy.

Neighbors told Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach that the shooting took place at a kid's birthday party on Caboose Court near Lawrenceville.

At first, no one knew how serious the boy’s injuries were. The 6-year-old had a welt on his upper chest, but he seemed OK. %

The boy was identified as Ni-Shawn Moore.

Neighbors first thought he was hit by a BB or pellet gun.

"Think it was a little kid's bounce party to the left here, a lot of people here," neighbor Derek Terry told Gehlbach.

The mother of one of the boys at the party was with the 6-year-old when he was shot and said the shooter was a grown man.

"I seen a lot of people running from down there, coming up running toward the party saying a little kid had got shot," the woman said, not identifying herself.

But Gwinnett County police say no one is talking or telling them who the suspect is.

"We know he was around a bunch of people, but don't know exactly who had the gun and pulled the trigger in this case," said Sgt. Jake Smith, with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Police say the boy was walking around and talking. %

They let his mother take him to get checked out at Gwinnett Medical Center. But at the hospital, X-rays showed a small caliber bullet still lodged in his chest.

He was then airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he's now recovering.

"That’s crazy man. Got get it off the street, can't be shooting a little kid," Terry said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Gwinnett police or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
