LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A Confederate monument in Gwinnett County was removed Thursday night and will now be put into storage.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved the removal of the monument outside the historic courthouse in Lawrenceville at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The monument was vandalized in June by protesters.

“In response, Gwinnett County Solicitor-General Brian Whiteside filed a lawsuit against Gwinnett County seeking a court order declaring the monument a public nuisance and directing County officials to remove it,” the board of commissioners said in a news release.

The monument was vandalized again on Thanksgiving Day.

“The resolution authorizes County staff to move the monument to an appropriate storage facility for protection and preservation until the court provides further direction or the lawsuit is resolved,” the release said.
