Early voting continues to shatter records across Georgia

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Georgia continues to see record early voting numbers all across the state as the Peach State remains the focus of the political world with a high-profile governor’s race and potential control of the U.S. Senate on the line.

More than 533,000 Georgians had already cast their ballots as of Thursday, as voters on both sides are energized for their candidates.

“There’s a reason why Georgia is at the center of the political universe in this country,” DNC chair Jamie Harrison told a group of Democratic supports in East Point Friday.

RNC chair Ronna McDaniel rallied Republican supporters in Macon.

“You need to work as hard as you possibly can. You do not want to wake up and say, ‘Woulda, shoulda, coulda,’” McDaniel said.

Both parties are pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into Georgia because so much is at stake — and Georgians appear to be paying attention.

“I think voters in Georgia feel that urgency; they feel that spotlight, the national spotlight, and people are really eager to go vote,” Kennesaw State University political science professor Kerwin Swint said.

Swint said historically, high voter turnout favors Democratic candidates, but this year, it could favor Republicans.

Either way, he said to expect to see the high turnout continue.

“I think we’re seeing that, and we’re going to continue to see that. I really expect this to set a record for midterm elections in Georgia,” Swint said.

We are fewer than 20 days away from the general election. Early voting continues until Nov. 4. Election Day is Nov. 8.
