GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Emergency crews have recovered the missing Chattahoochee River kayaker. The kayaker was identified as David Southin, 41, of Lawrenceville.
Firefighters were called out to the Chattahoochee River for a reportedly missing kayaker around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Forsyth County’s Swiftwater team was already in the water and found a kayak without anyone in it.
They called in help from Gwinnett County because the kayak was found in their jurisdiction.
Gwinnett County’s Swiftwater team was called in and started searching the water after launching from the McGinnis Ferry boat ramp.
Crews were not able to find anything from the air or using infrared scanners. Crews gave up around 3:30 a.m. when fog rolled in, but the search resumed around 8:30 a.m.

The Gwinnett County Swiftwater team is leading operations with assistance from Air 1, Johns Creek Fire Department, Forsyth County’s Dive Team, US National Park Service, Georgia Department of National Resources, Forsyth County’s Sherriff Office, and Suwanee Police Department. Recovery operations have continued throughout the day.
