GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A woman has been charged after police say she hit and killed her toddler granddaughter in Gwinnett County Tuesday.

Police said Gilma J. Ordonez-Guevara, hit Valeria Leiba with her SUV as she was backing out of a home on Memory Lane.

After the collision, Ordonez-Guevara carried the 23-month-old back into the home and then left the scene and went to her home, police said. She later walked back to the scene.

Investigators say the grandmother initially lied to them saying she was not involved.

The 44-year-old is facing charges of hit and run, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and driving with no license.

“There are not enough words to help bring solace to the victim’s family during such a tragic loss. We want the family to know that many people in Gwinnett and the surrounding communities are thinking of them during this difficult time,” the Gwinnett County Police Department said.
