It may be decades away, but Gwinnett County is a step closer to burying a dead mall and bringing the area back to life for the community.
Eighteen months of feedback from 3,000 people led to a Tuesday night vote about Gwinnett Place Mall.
County commissioners approved a “revitalization strategy” to revive the area off Interstate 85 and Pleasant Hill Road.
The area will be called Global Villages with up to 3,800 homes and 5,500 sq feet of retail space. There will also be an International Community Cultural Center along with 16 acres for parks.

Joe Allen with Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District told Channel 2 Action News that some major questions can start to get answers now that commissioners approved a plan.
“How do you begin to demolish a mall site and still allow the Macys and the mega mart to still function?” he said.

Chairwoman Nicole Hendrickson said ironing out finances for the billion-dollar project is one of the first next steps.
“Once we get a development firm in place to help drive this effort, we will determine what works with best for us,” she told Channel 2 Action News.
There’s no timetable yet for when the groundbreaking may happen.
