GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County firefighters are gearing up to install hundreds of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors right as fire dangers increase in the winter.

Fires tend to spike in December and January because of heaters being used during the cold weather.

The use of holiday lights is also a factor in the increase of fires during the winter.

“Things of that nature raises the possibility of fires,” Gwinnett County Deputy Fire Chief Stoney Polite told Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson.

Just last week two fires destroyed homes in Lilburn and Lawrenceville.

One of them started in the fireplace.

“A lot of our job is reactive and this is one situation where we can be a part of being proactive,” Polite said.

Kidde, a company that manufactures fire safety products, donated 330 smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that will be installed by firefighters.

Firefighters plan to head out into the community in the coming days and weeks with the alarms.

They say they’ve saved 32 lives over the past four years by installing smoke alarms in homes proactively.
