Man killed after breaking into Gwinnett home, police say

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police are searching for two men after a deadly shootout.

Authorities said it happened on Cainbridge Drive in Lawrenceville around 3 a.m. Monday. Police told Channel 2's Rikki Klaus an armed homeowner found three men inside his house.

Police said the four men exchanged gunfire, then the suspects ran. One of the men collapsed and died in a neighbor’s yard.

“The homeowner said that while sleeping, he heard a crash at the back door. He went to investigate and saw three males,” said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Frederick Saldana.

Police said he was waiting for officers in the front yard with a gunshot wound to the leg. The officers quickly took action that may have saved his life.

“Officers applied a tourniquet to the homeowner’s leg,” Saldana said.

Paramedics rushed him to the hospital. They said his condition is unknown.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified was shocked when Klaus told him the news.

“I’m kind of surprised to be honest. It’s a situation I would never want to be in,” he said. “It is an unpleasant thing, and I just didn’t expect to wake up and see all this stuff happening on my street.”

Police are asking anyone with information or who sees anything suspicious to call them.
