New mom reunites with Suwanee police officer who helped her give birth to baby

Roll back the clock to late in the afternoon of Friday, July 9. Jennifer Willingham-Lane was in the midst of having contractions when she and her husband Jason realized it was time to head to the hospital for Jennifer to give birth.

The couple scooped up their son Jason and dropped him off at a friend’s house and then started making their way to Northside Hospital.

The new child apparently decided not to wait that long. When Jennifer and her husband Michael realized the baby was on its way, the ended up pulling into the Suwanee Police substation on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road to ask for help.

The officer manning the station called for an ambulance and additional help which arrived in the form of Officer Ashley Kessler and Corporal Jeff Covert.

After a few seconds, the two officers realized the ambulance wasn’t going to make it to them fast enough. Kessler called her boyfriend’s mother who was a retired anesthesiologist for help.

Between the boyfriend’s mom and help on the scene, Officer Kessler did enough to help Jennifer deliver her baby girl who they named Charlotte, four minutes after pulling into the station parking lot.

“I realized after they left that I didn’t even know if the baby was a girl or boy!” said Kessler. “I’m pretty proud to say that I delivered a baby before my boyfriend, who is in physician assistant school.”

Kessler did her job well, Mom and baby Charlotte were fine and once the ambulance arrived, paramedics took the two to Northside Hospital just to be safe.
