NORCROSS, Ga. — A man is dead after a Gwinnett County officer hit and killed him early Sunday morning, investigators said.

The accident happened shortly after 3:30 a.m., on Brook Hollow Parkway near the intersection with Mitchell Road.
Gwinnett officials said, a West Precinct officer was traveling north on Brook Hollow Parkway, while the pedestrian, identified as Ramon Perez, 48, of Lawrenceville, was walking in the roadway.

According to Georgia State Patrol, the officer tried to avoid hitting Perez, by steering left, but was unable to avoid an accident.
After hitting Perez, the patrol car reportedly traveled up an embankment and hit a tree and fence.

Following the accident, the officer immediately began rending aid, but Perez later died from his injuries.
The officer whose identity has not been released suffered minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
