LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A shootout between a suspect and Gwinnett County police has left a K-9 and the man injured.
Police said they responded to an aggravated domestic violence call on Pine Lane just after 10 p.m. Monday.

Officials said a man threatened a woman with a handgun and ran from the scene before police arrived.
Gwinnett police K-9 unit and the Aviation Unit responded and located the man in a wooded area nearby. Police said the man started shooting at officers, hitting the K9.

Police returned fire and shot the man. Police said officers administered aid and the man was taken to a nearby hospital. He is expected to survive.
North Georgia Veterinary Clinic is taking care of the Gwinnett K9, whose name is Kai. He is recovering from two gunshot wounds, one in the shoulder and the other in his hip. Doctors expect him to survive.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation.
Channel 2′s Tony Thomas was in Buford, where he was able to visit Kai the K9. Several officers also showed up to visit the dog, who appeared to be in some pain, but was recovering.
“Right now, he is stabilized,” Sgt. Brian Doan said. “No major life-threatening injuries. We are just going to have to wait for him to heal a little bit to see the extent of any permanent damage that has been done.”
Police have not identified the man who was wounded by deputies.
