Man shot, killed at Gwinnett County shopping center

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Police were called to a shopping center in Gwinnett County after reports of a shooting Wednesday evening.

Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas was there moments after it happened and said there was a heavy police presence at the scene, a parking lot at the shopping center on Norcross Tucker Road near Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

Authorities said a man who was shot and rushed to the hospital later passed away.

Police aren't releasing the victim's name but said there's one person being questioned.

"I was here inside the store, and then I heard two gunshots," witness Irving Gaona said. "Very loud.”

He ran to see what happened. He later showed Channel 2's Justin Wilfon where he saw the victim.

“He was full of blood ... in his head," Gaona said.

Other witnesses called Gwinnett County police around 5:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they said they found the victim with one gunshot wound to his upper body.

“The male was transported to a local area hospital. Since then, the man has died of his injuries,” Cpl. Wilbert Rundles said.

The shots rang out in the middle of a crowded parking lot during rush hour.

Witnesses told police they saw a possible suspect running from the scene and a car speeding away.

“We do have witnesses here that are cooperating with the investigation, and we do have a person of interest that’s being detained at a location away from this scene," Rundles said.

Police told us the motive in the shooting remains unclear as they collected evidence from a car that was parked next to where the man was shot.

“I was scared to see that guy on the floor full of blood,” Gaona said.

There have been no arrests. The victim's name is being withheld until police can contact the family.
