Polls open Saturday for early voting in Gwinnett

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Voters lined up early this morning for early voting in Gwinnett County.

Around 6 a.m. Saturday, Channel 2's Steve Gehlbach saw the first people get in line at one of five new sites.

This is the first and only Saturday voters in Gwinnett County will have to cast a ballot.

The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

The Saturday voting is in response to the huge turnout the county is seeing at their main office.

Gwinnett opened two satellite sites during the week to meet the demand.

Starting today, and all next week, there will be a total of eight early voting locations.

Election officials say in just the first week they've broken the record for early voters set in 2008 -- and they expect the lines and wait times to grow all the way up until the last day of early voting on Friday.

"In 2008 we had lines that were approaching 12 hours on that last day in 2008, we didn't have as many locations open,” Joe Sorenson with Gwinnett County said.

Gehlbach says the advice is to get out this weekend, or earlier in the week.
