GWINNETT COUNTY — The Georgia State Patrol said a Porsche Cayman that sped away from a traffic stop on I-85 slammed into a 22-year-old man standing on the shoulder, killing him.

Troopers said the accident happened around 8 p.m. on Sunday near Chamblee Tucker Road.

Troopers said a trooper was attempting to pull over a Porsche that was speeding when the Porsche sped away, leading to a chase. Troopers said the driver made a rapid and improper lane change near Jimmy Carter Boulevard and lost control.

A 22-year-old man, identified as Hugo Martinez, was standing next to his disabled car and a wrecker on the side of the highway when he was hit by the Porsche. The driver of the wrecker was able to jump over a concrete barrier to safety.
The driver of the Porsche was identified as Victor Allen Smith, 55. He is facing at least 12 charges, including felony murder and first-degree homicide by vehicle. He is also accused of DUI and driving with a suspended license.
