Young married couple killed by falling tree would have celebrated first anniversary next month

BUFORD, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News has learned more about a young married couple who were both killed when a tree fell on their home in Buford Thursday morning.

Channel 2′s Tony Thomas was in Buford, where a tree crashed through the bedroom of the home on Garner street as Tropical Storm Zeta moved through, killing the couple as they slept.

Thomas talked to friends of the couple, who identified them as 24-year-old Grant Godbee and his 23-year-old wife, Mary. The couple had been married less than a year and would have celebrated their anniversary next month.

Friends said Godbee worked in production and was a member of the local Christian group Frvr Free.

A neighbor said Godbee’s brother came home looking for him after the storm and discovered the tragedy hours after it happened.

“He was all distraught, freaking out,” Ahban Hanken said. "You never really think about it until it happens right in your back yard. "

Gwinnett firefighters worked for hours to cut away parts of the tree to be able to get to the bodies.

The City of Buford has now condemned the house.

Thomas reached out to the Godbee family, but they said through friends that they are too heartbroken to talk to reporters.
