Gwinnett police make arrests in crime spree, shootings

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County police believe two men may be responsible for a series of crimes, including two shootings.

Channel 2's Tony Thomas spoke exclusively with the wife of one of the victims who says she believes the suspects were out looking to kill someone.

Police say the two were caught after wounding two people in two separate crimes.

One of the victims is recovering and still can't figure out why he was targeted during an apparent robbery.

Juan Sanchez's latest surgery was canceled after he developed an infection.

"I almost lost my husband, and now that the infection has set in, now we have that to worry about," said Beth Sanchez, Juan's wife.

Gwinnett County police believe Juan Sanchez was the last in a series of victims tied together by two men:  Anthony Penick and Ezekiel Boyd.

Detectives believe the two broke into an apartment Dec. 19 and stole three guns, then a week later, shot a woman in a drive-by at another apartment. Then just one hour later, shot Juan Sanchez after a struggle and robbery attempt.

"If guys are showing you their wallets and you ask for wallets, why don't you just take wallets? Why did you want to leave a bullet behind? Why did you want to take a life?" said Beth Sanchez.

Police so far have charged Penick and Boyd only with the Sanchez robbery and shooting, and are looking at other crimes.

"Detectives feel pretty strongly but we don't' have the evidence to charge them just yet," said Cpl. Jake Smith with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Beth Sanchez now fears what lies ahead. Doctors tell her Juan Sanchez won't walk for at least two years. He's hurt, and she's angry.

"I don't' know what they wanted. I do know what I want I want them to be locked up. I don't' want them to ever get out," Beth Sanchez said.

Police said they are looking at other burglaries and even shootings in the area because there is such a wide gap, an entire week, between when the guns were stolen and the first known crime occurred.
