Gwinnett police searching for driver who caused deadly hit-and-run crash

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett police investigators are searching for the driver who caused a deadly crash on Winder Highway and kept driving.

The crash happened around 6:40 a.m. on Nov. 24 at Still Road.

Police said 56-year-old Gelacio Urquiza Hernandez, of Winder, was driving west on Winder Highway when another vehicle hit him, causing him to lose control of his vehicle. Hernandez and his passenger, 36-year-old Luis Urquiza Requena, went over a guardrail and rolled down the embankment.

Requena died of his injuries. Hernandez was transported to a nearby hospital.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan was in Gwinnett County, where police said the car that caused the crash skidded to a stop, but then drove off. Because it was so dark, the driver who survived was not able to get a good look at the car that hit him.

Investigators don’t have a description of the vehicle that caused the crash but are asking for witnesses to call Gwinnett county investigators or Atlanta Crime Stoppers with any information.
