Beloved Hall County nurse dies of COVID-19 complications

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A beloved nurse who dedicated her life to helping others has died from coronavirus complications. Deb Stevers died Tuesday morning in Hall County.

The Northeast Georgia Health System confirmed her death to Channel 2 Action News Thursday. The system said she spent several weeks in critical care.

Stevers, known as “Mama Deb” by her co-workers, worked for 15 years at Gainesville’s Northeast Georgia Medical Center in the progressive coronary care unit.

“She took many new nurses under her wing and nurtured them through the early years of their careers. We, and her patients, will miss her friendly spirit and outgoing approach to life,” said NGHS president and CEO Carol Burrell. "We continue to do all we can to protect our heroes on the front lines of this battle, and they continue bringing their best, every day, to care for our community. There’s no better way to honor Deb’s life and legacy.”

Stevers is survived by her husband, two children, sister and granddaughter, according to her online obituary. Private services will be held at a later date.

Memorial Park Funeral Home in Gainesville is in charge of the arrangement.

Stevers is the first employee death for the hospital system. As of Thursday, they have had 113 employees test positive for COVID-19 out of their total 9,000 employees.
