“He is a treasure not only to Georgia, but to the country and the world,” said former Georgia Representative Erick Allen.
Allen spoke to Channel 2′s Courtney Francisco on WSB Tonight at 11 p.m. about the times he interacted with the former president.
“The most memorable was 2014 when Jason Carter was running for governor, and he was out there campaigning for his grandson,” said Allen. “It really showed you his political mind.”
He said he also met Carter at the Cobb Democratic Committee Fourth of July picnic and at his bible studies.
“Being around President Carter, you feel more like you’re just with a fellow Georgian. He is a very grounded individual. He loves people,” said Allen.
Regular visitors of the Carter Center shared that sentiment when describing the times they’ve met him walking around that campus.
“He is very humble. Very humble person, and you have to respect that,” said Jim Adkins.
“Certainly, he only had four years of presidency, but it extended well beyond that,” said Sonya Bellamy. “I think he used his platform for good for others.”

The Carter Center is preparing for visitors this week who want to study the museum after news of his health.
“We are in a moment of reflection and honor for one of the great leaders in this country, and as we do, I think we can all reflect, be inspired and learn from the lessons that he leaves behind,” said Allen. “It’s a very somber time, but I think we can also be encouraged that we have been able to witness such a legacy.”
