Heavy rain leads to flooded streets and cars, damage across metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — Several streets had too closed throughout metro Atlanta Wednesday morning after storms dumped inches of rain across the area.

Severe Weather Team 2 said anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of rain fell in the last 24 hours in areas of Cobb, Forsyth, Gwinnett and north Fulton counties.

Roswell police said Azalea Road was impassable at one point due to flooding between Willeo Road and Atlanta Street.

Triple Team Traffic’s Mark McKay flew over the area, where barricades were put in place.

“One vehicle has already become stuck, so please do not attempt to cross any flooded roads,” police said.

Channel 2′s Kristen Holloway spent most of the morning at the Marietta Crossing apartments off Delk Road.

At least 50 residents or more had their cars damaged in the flooding. Ronald Bastin was one of them.

“I picked up my phone and it was submerged in water. I turned on the light and there’s water everywhere, so we come outside and there’s water everywhere,” Bastin said.

Some cars were covered in mud on the inside and others who were able to start their car, water came shooting out the tail pipe.

“We looked into our cars and the water level was at the seats for both of our cars,” one woman said, saying she had to miss class Wednesday because of the flooding.

Bastin said his apartment flooded as well. He told Holloway that his apartment now needs new carpet.

He said this is the third time this year the complex has flooded and may need a third new car as well.

“Very frustrating because again we just moved here in March and we’ve now had three issues of flooding,” Bastin said. “If I have to get a new car, this will be my third brand new car since December.”

Cobb DOT crews worked 15 reports of flooded roadways overnight.

Cobb Fire and Emergency Services and Cobb police made multiple rescues of people trapped in flooded cars.

A Channel 2 viewer also reported that East Lake Parkway in Marietta has also collapsed in front of the Watermark apartments.

The American Red Cross said it is helping at least 10 families displaced from the storms:

“Volunteers are assisting the families out of Marietta who experienced flooding in their homes and apartments due to the overnight storm. The Georgia Red Cross is helping with immediate emergency needs, like temporary lodging, food, clothing, personal items, and health-related needs. Caseworkers will assist the families in the days ahead to help them begin their recovery process.”
