ATLANTA — Strong storms and heavy rain caused flooding across parts of north Georgia.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns said isolated storms dumped more than 5 inches of rain across Cedartown Tuesday afternoon in a matter of about three hours, causing flash flooding.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez drove up to Cedartown where residents said the rain was unprecedented.

“We’ve never seen it like this,” resident Kris Hulsey said.

Hulsey said he and his wife Sara were caught off guard when they got home from work and found their home under water.

“I need to get some of my belongings that are valuables, before my house is gone,” Hulsey said.

The couple who have lived in their house along North Cave Spring Street for about 5 years said they’ve never experienced flooding until powerful storms swept through their neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

“The bottom half here, the bonus room is about knee deep. It’s getting up there,” Hulsey said about the amount of water now in his home.

By nightfall, some breaks in the storm clouds allowed the floodwaters to start slowly receding, but it wasn’t enough to stop the creek that runs behind their home from overflowing and damaging their property.

“I’m going to have to take the most valuable things and leave the rest,” Hulsey told Jaquez.

The family packed up their kids, their dog and their most prized possessions, with the help of some of Hulsey’s co-workers, and headed out to safer grounds.

What’s worse is that they don’t know if they will have a home to come back to.

“We don’t know how high it’s going to get because it’s supposed to rain the next three days,” Hulsey said.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for most of north Georgia through Thursday.

“Some areas received a month’s-worth of rainfall total in just about three hours this afternoon,” Burns said.

Burns said the amount of rain that fell in parts of Cedartown on Tuesday, was about 137,000 gallons of water per acre of land. Burns said all that water weighs over 1 million pounds.

On Wednesday, the day will start out fairly dry, but the rain will become more widespread throughout the day. By the time school lets out and the evening rush hour begins, most of the metro will be dealing with widespread rain and thunder showers.

Burns said the rain will remain throughout most of the week.
