HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — The Henry County Humane Society says it will need to find a new home because the county is evicting the shelter from its building.
The shelter has been located on Work Camp Road in McDonough since 2005. In a Facebook post Tuesday, the humane society said it has to be out of the building by Feb. 1.
The shelter says it has several issues that need to be addressed before the deadline, mainly finding homes for the animals and a new building.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to the Henry County Government about the eviction.
The county says it agreed to let the Humane Society use the facility at no cost since 2005. However, the county says it notified the shelter on Oct. 20, 2023 that it needed the facility to expand the animal control facilities.
“Currently the county operates the Animal Care and Control shelter with a capacity for between 160 to 180 animals and those needs continue to grow. Plans to expand the shelter include having an on-staff veterinarian to ensure healthcare and help expedite the adoption of healthy animals,” the county wrote in a statement.
The county says it recently inspected the building and determined it is in disrepair.
“What originally started as a need for more space has turned into a safety issue and the difficult decision to move the Humane Society is overshadowed by the responsibility of the county to ensure the health and safety of employees, the public and the animals,” the county continued in its statement.

Capt. Michael Hobgood, the director of Henry County Animal Care and Control, says animal control will work with the Humane Society to find homes for the pets.
“And we would love to have their volunteers come to the county shelter and bring that same compassion and love to all of our animals in need,” Hobgood said.
Henry County Animal Care and Control is grateful for the Humane Society’s partnership and hopes that the collaboration can continue even after the organization relocates.
