COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Officers are searching for two men after police say one of them fired shots at a Cobb County police officer.

Investigators told Channel 2's Rikki Klaus around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, an officer saw something suspicious at a Mableton Parkway Exxon. Investigators said when he tried to pull a car over, a man leaned out the window and fired several shots at him. Neighbor Kevin Pate told Klaus he is grateful the bullets missed the officer.

“We were praying for him and just the whole situation,” he said. “We woke up at about 2 in the morning. Just cops, just sirens.”

The driver took off, and the two ditched the car nearby, on Venetian Way in Mableton, a short time later.

Cobb County police searched vehicles off Mableton Parkway, and made sure each driver was not under duress during a full-blown manhunt.

They checked Rhonda Mann’s car.

“My trunk and everything to make sure I didn’t have anybody in there, and there were dogs with them,” she said.

Detectives say a K-9 sniffed a promising scent that led them to a construction zone. But it ended there. Police have bumped up patrols within a three-mile radius of the scene. Mann said she hopes they're arrested soon.

“We’ve all been scared this morning,” Mann said.
