NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — An $800 million "major project" is expected to transform the interchange of I-285 and Georgia 400 in North Fulton County.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said about 400,000 vehicles pass through the interchange every day -- and with all the growth it was time for a major overhaul. The last one happened in 1993.
GDOT's transformation project is designed to improve traffic flow on 285 and 400. That includes the construction of 32 bridges, many of them flyover ramps.
"It really serves as the access for two of the biggest major highways in the metro Atlanta region," said Scott Higley with Georgia Department of Transportation.
There will also be the addition of collector-distributor lanes on 400 to divert traffic off the main highway.

Now entering its third year of construction, GDOT said the project is on schedule, with a completion date of late 2020. Until then, drivers will continue to face possible delays in construction areas.
"We work really hard to try to minimize disruptions to the public that said, you know again with any construction project delays are a big part of it," Higley said. "We think the community has really come to be aware that they need to plan a little more time as they're planning their daily activities or as they're planning to travel through the interchange."
To help reduce the impact, GDOT said it has as many lane closures and other work during the overnight hours.
The department also restricts lane closures around the holidays.
