DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. — The Dawson County sheriff said an 18-year-old high school student was killed in a car crash Monday morning.

The crash happened before 7:30 a.m. on Highway 53 at Buddy Burt Road.

Sheriff Jeff Johnson said two cars were involved in the accident.

The victim was identified as Grace Elizabeth Sheer. Sheer was named homecoming queen at Dawson County High School earlier this year.

Friends of the student told Channel 2's Berndt Petersen she was one of the best, brightest and most popular students on campus.

"Obviously it was sad. No high schooler can expect that to happen," said student Darren Johnson.

Administrators at Dawson County High activated the school's crisis response team to meet with any students who need help to cope with the tragedy.

Investigators said Sheer lost control of her car on Highway 53 and spun into the path of a tractor-trailer. Many described the spot as a "sharp curve" and say it's very dangerous.

"It's not safe," said student, Zach Bishop.

Some believe the section of the roadway should shoulder part of the blame.

"It's a recipe for disaster. We have to slow down in this curve. This is the most dangerous strip in Dawson County on Highway 53," said resident Dell Conner.

Conner said he plans to contact the sheriff and local state representatives to try to get the 55 mile per hour limit lowered.

The Georgia State Patrol has taken over the investigation.
