“I don’t understand how somebody keeps going:” Victim severely injured in hit-and-run speaks out

ATLANTA — A woman struck by a car and thrown across a busy intersection in Buckhead is still recovering.

Channel 2′s Justin Carter spoke with Valerie Pableo on Sunday as the search to find the driver continues.

It happened as she crossed Peachtree Road with a group of friends around 2:30 a.m. on August 20.

Pableo said as she was crossing the street, a black car came out of nowhere and struck her head on, and she flew from one corner to another.

The whole incident was caught on camera. Even though it is extremely hard to watch for Pableo, she wants people to see it.

The hit was so high impact, it knocked her shoes off.

“Once he hit me, he didn’t even slow down or stop,” Pableo said, “I couldn’t see him because he was going so fast.”

She spent two weeks in the hospital with brain bleeding, a fractured skull, several broken bones, and her hip and pelvis shattered.

As she continues to heal, she now uses a walker.

“Obviously, walking I can’t do and it’s still hard and painful but I’m thankful to be moving around again,” Pableo told Channel 2 Action News. “I’m glad I’m not paralyzed.”

Police said the car involved is an unknown black sedan and the driver reportedly did have the green light but never stopped.

“Are you thinking about whether you hurt me? Whether you killed me or what? I don’t understand how somebody keeps going,” she said.

There’s still an active search for that car and the driver. Pableo said she doesn’t have health insurance and the community so far has raised over $30,000 for her mounting medical bills.
