Atlanta ICE field office vandalized

ATLANTA — A group vandalized the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in downtown Atlanta overnight Sunday.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington was at the scene off Ted Turner Drive, where federal agents and Homeland Security police were standing outside.

The Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice and immigration court offices are also located inside. Investigators are collecting evidence and working to determine the cost of the damage.

The damage is significant with a lot of shattered glass from broken windows and graffiti on the building and streets. The Norfolk Southern building across the street also has damage.

Washington spoke to a person who was at the building at the time of the vandalism, and said there was a planned demonstration, but that the vandals were not a part of it.

Social media videos sent to Washington how a chaotic scene Saturday night with a group throwing things into the building, including firecrackers. You can also see green lasers being used to disable the surveillance cameras.

Gov. Kemp issued a statement Sunday night, saying, “Our office and state law enforcement stand ready to assist our federal partners if needed.”

The scene is similar to what played out earlier this month on July 5 outside the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Georgia state troopers said a group of up to 100 protesters vandalized the building.

The next day, Gov. Brian Kemp put in place a State of Emergency in reference to the “unlawful assemblage and violence.” The order originally was set to expire Monday before Kemp extended it until August 24.
