‘I’m lucky to be alive:’ Large tree uproots, destroys Ga. couple’s home following severe storms

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — One Floyd County couple says they feel lucky to be alive after a large tree uprooted and destroyed their home Saturday.

Willie Glass told Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes that he and his wife were drinking coffee in their bedroom when a large tree in their front yard fell onto their house during the storm around 5 a.m.

“It sounded like some strong wind,” Glass said. “It was like a gust of wind, and in minutes, it was gone.”

Heavy storms passed through northwest Georgia Saturday morning causing several severe thunderstorm warnings and one tornado watch to be issued.

Glass said that if the tree had landed a couple of inches away from where it ended up, he and his wife might not have been able to live to tell the tale.

“I’m lucky to be alive,” he said.

Other residents in Floyd County reported damaged houses, stores and cars following the storms.

No confirmed injuries have been reported from the storm at this time.
