TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — Police have identified and are charging a man they said stole a doorknob from the top of a historic lighthouse on Tybee Island.
Investigators said the man took the brass doorknob from the 155-year-old historic lighthouse on June 3.

The group who works on the lighthouse offered to have the alleged thief return the doorknob before getting police involved. When they did not hear anything, they contact the Tybee Island Police Department.
Within hours a post from Tybee Island police with the man’s photo had been shared more than 3,000 times, leading to tips flooding in.
Police say one of those tips led them to a man in Greene County, Indiana. His identity has not been released.

The Greene County Sheriff’s went to the man’s home and recovered the doorknob. Arrangements are being made to have it sent back to Tybee Island.
Police say charges are pending for the man who took the doorknob.
