Investigation underway after student shot inside Ga. high school, deputies say

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. — An investigation is underway after a shooting occurred at a Richmond County high school.

It was around 11 a.m. on Wednesday when Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a shooting at TW Josey High School.

According to Channel 2′s ABC affiliate WJBF-TV, the shooting occurred inside the school cafeteria after an altercation between two students.

Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree told WJBF that a student was injured, after being shot in the finger.

A suspect who is believed to be a teen has been identified, WJBF reports. A search is underway for the alleged suspect. The high school was placed on lockdown and then evacuated.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement:

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Investigators are on the scene at Josey High School in reference to a shooting call on the school’s campus. We are asking the parents to report Josey’s football stadium to reunify with their students.

The Richmond County School issued the following statement:

Two students were involved in an altercation at TW Josey High School where one student was shot. The campus was secured under a lockdown, and Richmond County Police responded. The injured student is in stable condition and is receiving medical attention. The shooter is not in the area around campus. Out of an abundance of caution, Murphey Middle School was also secured. The incident is under investigation by Richmond County Police.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
