Jimmy Carter state funeral: Schedule changes for Tuesday’s events due to Washington D.C. weather

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Officials have updated Tuesday’s state funeral schedule for former President Jimmy Carter due to winter weather impacting the nation’s capital.

The late president’s body will be escorted from the Carter Center in Atlanta to the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.

Between five to 10 inches of snow fell across the Washington D.C. region on Monday. Today’s events were scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., but each ceremony has been pushed back approximately 90 minutes.

Tuesday’s schedule includes a departure ceremony from the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta; a departure ceremony from Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia; an arrival ceremony at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland; a funeral procession from the U.S. Navy Memorial to the U.S. Capitol; and an arrival ceremony and service at the U.S. Capitol.

Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Tuesday night until Thursday morning, the day of his funeral services.

Here’s a breakdown of the timeline for Tuesday. Channel 2 Action News and ABC News will have special coverage throughout the day.

TUESDAY, JAN. 7, 2025

7 a.m. – Lying in Repose concludes.

11 a.m. – A departure ceremony from the Carter Presidential Center.

11:30 a.m. – The motorcade departs for Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia.

12:10 p.m. – The late president and his family arrive at Dobbins Air Reserve Base and board Special Air Mission 39 after an arrival ceremony.

12:45 p.m. – Special Air Mission 39 departs for Washington.

2:15 p.m. – Special Air Mission 39 arrives at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, and Carter’s remains are transferred with ceremony to the hearse.

2:45 p.m. – The motorcade departs for the U.S. Navy Memorial.

3:30 p.m. – The motorcade arrives at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Carter’s remains are transferred from a hearse to a horse-drawn caisson with ceremony.

4:10 p.m. – The funeral procession begins marching up to the U.S. Capitol via Pennsylvania Avenue, turning left onto Constitution Avenue. Upon arrival at the U.S. Capitol, the late president is carried up the stairs by military body bearers and into the Rotunda.

4:30 p.m. – Congress pays their respects during a service in the Rotunda.

6 p.m. – Carter begins lying in state while the military maintains a guard of honor.

6 p.m. to midnight – Lying in state opens to the public.
