Jimmy Carter’s family thanks everyone for their ‘outpouring of love and support’

ATLANTA — Former President Jimmy Carter’s family issued a new statement on Thursday thanking everyone for the support in days after his death.

Carter died Sunday at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Ga.

“The outpouring of love and support we have received from around the world confirms what we have known all along — Jimmy Carter’s family extends far beyond blood relatives. We are sincerely grateful for everyone’s words of comfort and acts of kindness following the passing of such a champion of human rights, justice, and peace,” the Carter family said.

The Carter family, the nation and the world will say their goodbyes to the former president during events and funerals that will span about a week.

Events begin Saturday, with the family traveling from Plains to Atlanta, where Carter will in repose at the Carter Presidential Center until Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, the late president and his family will travel to Washington, D.C., where Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol in the Rotunda through Thursday night. The public will be invited to pay their respects until 7 a.m. on Thursday.

After the public viewing, a motorcade will carry Carter from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington National Cathedral where a state funeral will be held. The Carter family will then travel from Washington D.C. back to the Carter residence in Plains for a private interment.
