ATLANTA — If you live in Georgia and were hoping for a White Christmas, you’ll have to travel far to see one.

Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says the closest place to see snow will be in the West Virginia mountains over 350 miles away.

In fact, it’s very rare for Atlanta to see snow on Christmas Day. Nitz says it has happened only twice going back to the 1800s since record keeping began.

In 1882, about 0.3 inch of snow fell on Christmas Day based on measurements. But the second time was 14 years ago.

On Dec. 25, 2010, about 1.3 inches of snow was measured at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta. You may remember more snow on the ground further north.

Nitz says between 2-4 inches of snow fell in metro Atlanta while folks in the north Georgia mountains saw anywhere from four inches to seven inches of snowfall.

But for 2024, you can expect Christmas Day to be sunny and breezy with highs in the 50s.
