At least 25 people injured when floor collapses during massive party near UGA

ATHENS, Ga. — Police say 25 people were injured when a floor collapsed during a party in Athens early Friday morning.

Athens Clarke-County police said the collapse happened on Magnolia Bluff Drive around 1 a.m.

Police estimated that around 500 people were at the party when the first floor of the home collapsed into a crawl space. First responders had a hard time getting close to the home due to the large number of vehicles and people blocking the street.

“Our crews assisted police in the removal of victims of the accident from the crawl space and assisted EMS crews with triaging patients and assessing injuries,” officials said. “A secondary search for hidden victims was conducted and none were found.”

The victims’ injuries ranged from scratches and cuts to a possible broken arm. No patients were taken to the hospital by EMS but some said they would drive themselves. There were no apparent life-threatening injuries.

“We are grateful that this unexpected event didn’t turn out any worse than it did”, Captain Nate Moss, a representative of the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department, said.

“Many times, overcrowding can result in collapses of decks and flooring, especially in older structures. The thing that helped, in this case, was the lack of elevation.”

Code enforcement was contacted to see if the property could be condemned.
