Strong storms topple trees, down power lines across metro Atlanta on Monday

ATLANTA, Ga. — Multiple severe thunderstorms toppled trees and downed power lines across metro Atlanta Monday night. Some of the storms packed winds of up to 80 mph.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for most of the northern half of the state until 12 a.m.

By Monday night, thousands of people were without power in metro Atlanta.

Severe Weather Team 2 tracked these storms as they moved in, on Channel 2 Action News throughout the afternoon and evening.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Putnam and Jasper counties until 7:15 p.m.

6:31 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Oconee, Morgan, Clarke, Walton, Greene, Oglethorpe and Jasper counties until 7:15 p.m.

6:17 p.m.

Triple Team Traffic is reporting flooding on the Downtown Connector.

Nearly 30,000 people in DeKalb County are without power. In Fulton County, more than 25,000 people are without power.

A tree has fallen on GA-400 past Northridge Drive, blocking two right lanes.

MARTA has shut down in Chamblee after a tree fell and blocked the tracks going in both directions. Passengers are being taken back to the previous station and will be bussed to their destinations.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has issued a statement ahead of this afternoon’s storms, saying:

“Sunday’s severe weather impacted operations across the southeast. With inclement weather expected to hit the northeast today and Atlanta later this afternoon, passengers are urged to monitor their airlines for information regarding flight status. As always, ATL.com will provide updated parking information and security wait times.”

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for most of metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

The watch includes Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Jackson, Lumpkin, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rockdale, Towns, Union, Walton, White counties until 8 p.m.
