Shooting victim stumbles onto DeKalb school property

LITHONIA, Ga. — A shooting across the street from a DeKalb County middle school prompted a lockdown Monday afternoon.

Police say a man was shot in the stomach at a park across from Salem Middle School just after 3:30 p.m.

The victim wandered across the street onto school property for help, according to officers.

The school, which has more than 1,000 students, was placed on lockdown and several DeKalb School Resource Officers responded to the victim.

The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Police found drug paraphernalia in the park after the shooting.

Investigators are going through the school's surveillance video to help identify potential suspects. Officers say the two men were driving a silver or gray Mercedes.

The lockdown was lifted a short while later and students were able to leave campus on schedule at 4 p.m.
