Many people have been looking for work. When the COVID-19 pandemic first started, millions of Georgians lost their jobs. It has recovered some and Georgia’s unemployment rate stands at 6.4% with new numbers out later Thursday.
Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes has been speaking with unemployed Georgians who are looking for work. Danelle Valenzuela is a chef and caterer who found her niche working in college and universities. She felt grounded in what she thought was a stable career.
“I left the restaurant business because I knew restaurants close all the time – and I’m like school is never gonna be closed.”
But then the pandemic hit in March and Valenzuela found herself unemployed. She doesn’t know when she can go back to her old job but is looking for other jobs to pay the bills.
“I’m willing to switch careers if I have to, to find a job,” she told Fernandes.
Stores hiring for the holiday season is a lifeline for people like Valenzuela.
“People were relying on buying things online – and so now people are more comfortable going out and purchasing things,” she said. “So I think it''ll be a good thing to have these jobs.”
