A man died by the entrance sign to a Ga. Sheriff’s Office; no one noticed for several days

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — The body of a man who died after he was released from jail spent days by the entrance sign to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, according to a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Office.

William Roberts, 44, was arrested for public intoxication, investigators say. He was released the following day on Apr. 23 after he sobered up and the Sheriff’s Office believed he could get home safely.

Surveillance video shows Roberts never left the area and ended up laying down behind the entrance sign to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

It is unclear why he decided to lie down. A Sheriff’s Office employee found Roberts’ body behind the entrance sign several days later on Apr. 26.

The Sheriff’s Office began what they describe as a thorough investigation of the incident.
