FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — A Cave Spring man died after a crash during severe storms Monday evening.
Larry Agan, 65, died hours after a tree fell on his pickup truck on Old Highway 100 near the Polk-Floyd County line. His brother told Channel 2's Shae Rozzi that he was traveling with his son during the storm.
"They ran into the wind and rain, and they were about blinded by the rain," Kenneth Agan told Rozzi. "All of a sudden, they couldn't see it, but I guess a tree fell."
Agan's son punched through the passenger side window to climb out.
Firefighters peeled back the roof and cut off the driver side door to remove Agan. His brother said Agan's heart stopped five times, and he ultimately died during surgery.
His granddaughter described him as a gentle giant who had a will to live.
"He survived major bypass surgery a couple of months ago," Rebecca Richardson told Rozzi. "Then, a tree falls and gets him. God works in weird ways, but he has a reason."
Richardson said she finds comfort in the thought that her grandfather is now with her grandmother in heaven.
"He's happier than we are," she said.
