EAST POINT, Ga. — MARTA released new video Friday that shows a terrifying crash between a train and one of its buses in East Point.
MARTA officials said the bus crossed the train tracks on Welcome All Road to make a left onto Ben Hill Road. Traffic had backed up from the light and a portion of the bus was still on the tracks when the train crashed into it, according to MARTA officials.
The bus was hit once, spun around and was hit again, MARTA officials said.
Surveillance video from inside and outside the bus shows several different angles of the crash.
You can hear passengers yelling to the driver as they sit on the tracks, "Hey! Train's coming. Train coming."
You can see the bus driver frantically honk his horn at the car stopped in front of him.
Seconds later, the passengers stand and run to the doors.
“Open the door, open the door!” one passenger yells to the driver.
Once the doors open, a few passengers are able to step out of the bus, but those who didn't make it were thrown through the doors when the train struck.
The driver, who is still in his seat as the crash happens, is thrown out of the seat and onto the ground.
As the bus spun, it hit one of the passengers who had stepped off the bus, seriously injuring him.
A witness told Channel 2 Action News that passengers were crying, screaming and shaking in those frightening moments.
MARTA confirmed that all six people were taken to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment.
According to MARTA, the 65-year-old man struck when the bus spun suffered serious head and neck injuries, and remains in the hospital.
MARTA reports the other four passengers, a 48-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man, have been released from the hospital.
MARTA says the driver had been an employee since 2009.
The driver underwent a mandatory drug and alcohol test, and has been placed on leave with pay.
