Metro Atlanta principal, wife hospitalized with coronavirus

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — A metro Atlanta principal and his wife are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. Their relatives said they have no underlying health problems and they are only 36 years old.

Channel 2′s Tom Regan was in Floyd County, where Kyle Abernathy is the principal at Cave Spring Elementary. Abernathy may be released from the hospital soon, but his wife, April, is still in critical condition.

Regan talked to April Abernathy's sister Amanda Hebert, who said the fact that they got so sick came as a complete shock.

"She is still listed as critical but stable condition," Hebert said. "His labs and vitals remained good however. She is still on a respirator."

Hebert said the couple attended services earlier this month at the Church at Liberty Square in Cartersville and got sick within days.

"My sister started running a fever and she developed a cough," Hebert said. "The next day, on Monday, she went to the ER."

The pastor and county health officials said other members of the church have also tested positive for the coronavirus. People who attended services at the church during the last few weeks have been told to self-isolate and monitor symptoms for two weeks. The church is closed.

"From what we have heard, there are several members of the church and the choir who are being tested," Hebert said. "We are not sure of the numbers right now."

Hebert has set up a GoFundMe page to help her sister and brother-in-law with expenses. They have two young children.

“We are just trying to get some support in that way to help them out,” Hebert said.
