Over 26K without power as strong winds, snow brings down trees and powerlines

NORTHEAST GEORGIA — Tens of thousands of customers are without power after a snow and wintry mix moved through north Georgia.

A high wind advisory is in effect for most of metro Atlanta and Severe Weather Team 2 says wind gusts up to 20-30 mph are possible. Winds reaching more than 50 mph were detected earlier Sunday in the metro area.

The winds combined with the snow and freezing rain have caused trees and power lines to fall.

As of 3 a.m., Georgia Power is reporting that 11,860 customers do not have power across the state. Georgia EMCs are reporting 14,713 customers without power.

Both Georgia Power and Georgia EMCs say crews have been working diligently throughout the day as is safe for them to do in order to restore power as quickly as possible.

What to do if your power goes out

• Download Severe Weather Team 2 app that allows you to watch television and get weather updates.
• Do not call 911 to report a power outage.
• Use flashlights or battery powered candles instead of real candles.
• Dress for the season. Wear several layers of loose fitting, warm clothing.
• Unplug all sensitive electronic equipment like TVs, computers, microwaves, cordless phones.
• Leave one light on so you know when power returns.
