Mother of 15-year-old charged in teen’s death at MARTA station says shooting was not his fault

EAST POINT — The mother of a 15-year-old boy accused of killing a 16-year-old at a MARTA station claims that her son didn’t mean to pull the trigger.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones was in East Point, where Jaylan Major was shot to death in April.

The mother of one of the teens accused in Major’s death said her son was trying to get his attackers to stop beating on him when the gun went off.

The mother, who didn’t want to be identified, said her son was suddenly attacked inside the station on April 30 in an exclusive interview on Channel 2 Action News at 5 p.m. Monday.

She said her son pulled outhis gun to get his attackers to back off. That’s when it went off.

Now, Majors is dead at the 15-year-old is behind bars.

“Each and every day, I think about my son. I think about that deceased child,” she said. “This is not my son’s fault. It’s not his fault at all.”

The 15-year-old is facing murder charges. An 18-year-old boy has also been charged with simple battery and involuntary manslaughter.

The mother said her son was on the way to work at McDonald’s at the East Pont MARTA station. She said the 18-year-old began beating her son and that Majors joined in on the attack. She said the 18-year-old had been tormenting her son at school for awhile.

“He said, ‘Mama, when they was jumping me the gun was in my hand and the gun went off,” she said. “I know my son is not a killer.”

Police didn’t see it that way. They initially charged the 10th grader with voluntary manslaughter and then upgraded the charge to murder.

She blames the 18-year-old for Majors’ death.

“Because if he hadn’t never came after my son, that child would still be living,” she said.

She said she had no idea her son had a gun and warned him about the consequences.
