Motorcyclist talks to Channel 2 about the crash that left him without a leg

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — A motorcyclist who lost his leg in a wreck is only talking to Channel 2 Action News about his plans to take the road back.

"I ended up striking her on the side," said David Reames. "I did about out three or four cartwheels, flying through the air. It was only when I crawled out got on to the sand that I realized what had happened."

The 25-year-old said the loss of most of a leg after the collision between his motorcycle and a small car on a dirt road in Tyrone was caught on his helmet cam in 2012. Reames said he even had to put a tourniquet on his own leg.

"When I turned around and saw the state of my body, how bad it was, I knew it was life or death. Its staring right at you," Reames said. "I was not ready to give up."

Reames said the experience has turned his life around and make something better from it. He's in the midst of starting a new business in Athens.

"I was really given the opportunity to start over again and it would be silly of me to squander that," Reames said.

Reames said he still feels the effects of the accident to this day.

"There are multiple times during the day when I just spaz out in pain," Reames said.

The driver, Pam Smith's, attorney Lee Sexton said Smith maintains she's innocent of serious injury by vehicle and other charges she faces in connection with the accident. She plans to fight it all the way

Reames said he's hoping for a creative sentence that doesn't create more pain for Smith's family.

Reames said there were questions about the facts of the case he did not want to answer because of the pending case. He said he was trying to pass the car and he frankly does not know what the speed limit was there.

Reames gives credit to a good Samaritan named Lauren Lancaster who slogged down into the creek with him and to the emergency medical workers who got there quickly.
